Township of Spallumcheen council is committed to supporting emergency preparedness.

At a community level, council has applied for and received $35,000 from the Community Resiliency Investment - FireSmart Community Funding program. The township also applied for and was awarded $45,000 in funding jointly with the City of Armstrong from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund to work on Evacuation Route Planning for the communities.

In addition, council hosted two Community Wildfire Preparedness meetings for residents in March and April.

To continue this commitment to emergency preparedness, council has launched FireSmarting contests, effective May 2, asking residents to work at FireSmarting their properties and in doing so, be entered to win prizes.

“It’s a great time to get people thinking about FireSmarting before fire season is fully here,” said township Mayor Christine Fraser. “FireSmarting is so important because we are surrounded by forested areas and we have seen countless examples of how people have completed FireSmarting on their property and it made the difference in being able to save their homes.”

Two contests began Monday, May 2, one for Spallumcheen property owners and one for Spallumcheen youth aged 5-18.

Property Owner Contest

• Complete FireSmarting activities on your property by submitting before and after photos that show the project(s) completed;

• Every property demonstrating improved FireSmarting will be entered in a grand prize draw for a $350 prize pack;

• Contest submissions must be received no later than June 10.

Youth Contest (5-18 year olds)

• List five activities that could be done to FireSmart your property;

• Every submission will be entered into a grand prize draw for a pair of AirPods;

• Contest submissions must be received no later than June 10.

“FireSmarting activities don’t have to cost a lot or be elaborate,” said Fraser. “It can be as simple as raking and removing pine needles and dry leaves close to your home’s foundation or cleaning pine needles from your roof and gutters.”

More information, full contest rules and entry form are all available on the Township website www.spallumcheentwp.bc.ca and at the municipal office.
