The Township of Spallumcheen has denied neighbouring City of Armstrong a permissive tax exemption for 2017 on a piece of property in Spallumcheen leased by the city.

The City of Armstrong will not get a tax exemption in 2017 from the Township of Spallumcheen.

The city leases a piece of property on Thomas Hayes Road –which is in the township – and subleases it to Spallumcheen’s Riverbreeze Farm for purposes of farm and spray irrigation of reclaimed water.

“Tax exemptions are for societies struggling financially,” said Coun. Christine Fraser. “That’s what we base our decisions for exemptions on.”

Spallumcheen did exempt the property in 2016, which would have been worth $2,818.64.

The property exemption for 2017 was set at $2,888.30.

Permissive tax exemption applications are done on a yearly basis.

Council did approve permissive tax exemption applications from the Caravan Farm Theatre Society, Grandview Seventh Day Adventist Church, Hullcar and Deep Creek Hall Society, Monastery of the Carmel of St. Joseph, O’Keefe Ranch and Interior Heritage Society.

The exemptions total $17,127.21.
