Spallumcheen home sustains significant fire damage

Firefighters were on the scene on Lockhart Drive for six hours

Fire forced five people out of a Spallumcheen residence.

Firefighters were called to a home on Lockhart Drive at about 4:44 a.m. Saturday.

“The fire was through the roof and totally consuming the back deck,” said Ian Cummings, Armstrong-Spallumcheen fire chief.

A couple who owned the house and three friends were inside when the blaze started.

“They managed to get out,” said Cummings.

Fifteen firefighters tackled the blaze for about six hours.

The couple had insurance but it’s not known if the structure can be salvaged.

“There was major damage to the top floor and it’s mostly burned out. There’s significant smoke and water damage in the basement,” said Cummings.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

“It doesn’t appear to be suspicious,” said Cummings.
