Stolen goods found at stop

The truck hauling a trailer that was carrying a Caterpillar loader was stopped by local police for some serious traffic infractions.

The truck hauling a trailer that was carrying a Caterpillar loader early in November was stopped by local police for some serious traffic infractions.

While dealing with the vehicle check, however, the officer from the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP’s integrated road safety unit determined that the large flatdeck work trailer and Cat loader had been reported stolen out of Medicine Hat in October.

The driver, a 35-year-old North Okanagan man, was arrested and charged with Criminal Code offences of two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and three counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The driver was also given Motor Vehicle Act charges of one count of no insurance (which carries a $598 fine), one count of misuse of plates ($109 fine) and one count of exceeding the gross licensed vehicle weight ($678 fine).

The truck was more than 5,000 kilograms over its allotted weight.

The driver was released on a promise to appear in court.

The estimated value of the stolen property recovered was more than $42,000, and was returned to its rightful owner in Alberta.
