A 40-year-old man from New Westminster is facing potential charges after a Lake Country convenience store was robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday morning.

Lake Country RCMP responded to an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven Convenience Store in the 9700 block of Highway 97 shortly before 3 a.m.

“A lone masked male suspect reportedly entered the store brandishing a rifle and demanded cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes,” said RCMP spokesperson Const. Kris Clark.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle with an undisclosed amount of cash and stolen goods.

No one was injured during the incident.

A dark Pontiac G6 was spotted by police driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Glenmore Road and investigators initiated a pursuit.

The driver continued northbound, eventually making his way onto the Pelmewash Parkway with officers close behind. Just south of Oyama, when the suspect attempted a u-turn and had slowed significantly, police seized the opportunity to end the pursuit by forcing his vehicle into the ditch.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, and police recovered the stolen cash and property.

A 40-year-old man from New Westminster is facing potential charges of armed robbery, disguise with intent, flight from police, obstruction and resisting arrest.

He was remanded in custody pending a court appearing Wednesday.
