Lake Country officials are working on the 2017 budget.

Lake Country residents are another step closer to a tax hike.

Council gave the 2017 budget bylaw two readings Tuesday. It includes a 3.5 per cent tax increase although that could drop to 3.2 per cent.

"There's more growth and assessments so we may not need as high a tax increase for the revenue we need," said Mayor James Baker.

A 3.5 per cent tax increase will translate into an additional $60 for the average home.

Coun. Owen Dickie is pleased with the budget process.

"There are some added services while we become more efficient in our operations," he said.

Among the items that may be pursued this year is a study of housing availability in the community.

"We want to get a clear indication of our situation," said Dickie.

Money is also being put aside for infrastructure such as transportation.

"Reserves are essential for good, future decisions. If there is money in reserves and you don't have to borrow, you can get things done if there is an emergency," said Baker.

The budget must still be adopted by council.
