The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser is Feb. 25 but a launch party will be held at the Upper Room Mission Jan. 12.

There is a time to warm up before hitting the cold streets of Vernon.

The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser isn’t until Feb. 25 but the Upper Room Mission will host a launch party Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at 3403 27th Ave.

“Gather up your family or a group of friends or co-workers and come out and learn more about the event, how to sign up a team, check out the new routes and more,” said Lisa Anderson, event director.

“Posters, bookmarks, and information packages will be available, as well as tips on recruiting walkers to your team. This info night is great for first-time walkers, as well as those that have walked and raised funds in the past.”

Volunteers are also being sought for the Feb. 25 walk.

“We will have information on how you can join this wonderful cause,” said Anderson.

During the Coldest Night of the Year, participants can better understand the experience of being on the streets during the winter. Participants can walk five or 10 kilometres and raise funds for the Upper Room Mission.

This year, the walk begins and ends at the Elks Lodge at 3103 30th St., where participants will register, turn in the results of their fundraising efforts, and return at the end of the evening for a celebration meal. The URM will be the rest stop along the route.

URM’s goal is to raise $50,000 for its 2017 food budget.

“In 2016, the food security program served close to 90,000 hot meals to those in need,” said Anderson.

“The healthy snack program also falls under food security, and feeds more than 250 local school aged children and youth.”

It’s anticipated the Coldest Night of the Year will attract 250 walkers and 30 teams. Bannister Honda and GM is the lead sponsor.
