There will be one less opportunity for Vernon residents to pay parking fines.

All parking ticket drop boxes will be removed from the downtown core during the first week of May.

“Use of these boxes has dropped significantly in the last few years and it is no longer financially reasonable to maintain this method of payment,” said Tanya Laing Gahr, the city’s communications officer.

Ticket payments through the ticket drop box system have fallen from more than 70 per cent of daily ticket payments in the early 2000s to about 10 per cent.

“Online services have facilitated the ability to pay parking tickets from a smartphone or home computer,” said Laing Gahr.

Ticket payment boxes will remain in place at city hall and across from the post office adjacent to the clock tower on 31st Street.

“Temporary signage will be placed where existing drop boxes are located to provide information on the removal and encourage alternative options for payment,” said Laing Gahr.

“Payment options may include the online services through the city website, through postal services, at remaining drop boxes or in person at city hall or the community services building.”
