Motorists are being advised of special measures being taken as Vernonites gather Monday to pay tribute to Patrick Nicol.
A memorial service for Nicol, a city councillor and regional district chairperson who died Jan. 15 from cancer, will be held at Trinity United Church at 2 p.m.
As a large turnout is expected, significant planning has gone into traffic flow and parking.
“There’s been a lot of details organized and Patrick and the community deserve it,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky.
In order to accommodate additional public parking, the right-hand driving lanes on Alexis Park Drive, between 30th and 39th avenues, will be closed to traffic on Monday between 1 and 4:30 p.m.
The city is requesting the public’s co-operation in reducing congestion and increasing safety by avoiding the Alexis Park Drive area during this time period.
Bylaw compliance officers and community policing volunteers and staff will be on hand to direct traffic on Alexis Park Drive.
There is limited parking at Trinity United Church, so street parking will be accommodated and drop-off areas will be provided at the church.
Anyone wanting to attend the service is being advised that there’s limited seating at the church.
As a result, the city is establishing a live video feed of the service at Kal Tire Place and the Schubert Centre.
“Everyone can be accommodated so they can honour Patrick,” said Sawatzky.
