Officials are being warned to put a structure in place or the benefit of trails could go off course.

The Ribbons of Green Society has told the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee that a focus is needed as the Okanagan Rail Trail is developed, as is the last bits of the Grey Canal Trail and other routes.

“The time to start planning is upon us,” said Debbie Clarke, society member.

“We need a good planning process with lots of vision.”

Among the issues to be tackled are parking, washrooms and commercial services, particularly along the rail trail.

“It’s critical that we put together an organization that wraps its head around this stuff,” said Victor Cummings, society member.

On top of this, the society wants to ensure there is increased awareness about the trails and links are created between the paths to enhance the recreational experience.

“It’s important that someone checks into a hotel and knows how to get on to the Grey Canal,” said Cummings.

“The scale of change is dramatic. People will come here to live or visit with these kinds of trails.”

Eventual links could also occur to a proposed trail network from Armstrong to Sicamous.

GVAC officials have suggested that various groups could be brought together to look at the future of trails.

“We will need the support of our stakeholders,” said Juliette Cunningham, chairperson.
