Details are becoming known about the City of Vernon’s new committee structure.
Just a week after the city revealed it was chopping 15 committees to about seven, it has created a transportation committee, which consists of the former accessibility, parking and transportation demand management groups. In terms of other committees, affordable housing, advisory planning and economic development have made the council cut.
“We had too many committees doing the same job so this consolidation will help,” said Coun. Bob Spiers.
The fate of the remaining committees is still not known. They include the athletic commission, audit, biosolids, the board of variance, environmental, finance, heritage, sister cities and tourism.
Beyond creating efficiencies and perhaps saving some funds, it’s hoped the new committee structure will keep community volunteers active in the process.
“It will make it a lot easier for the people involved to get a quorum,” said Spiers, adding that occasionally there aren’t enough people present for a meeting to occur.
The city looked at its internal structure after the 2013 core services review by KPMG suggested there were too many committees.
