Helping the community is in the bag.

Volunteers will be handing out breakfast bags by donation during the United Way drive-thru breakfast fundraiser Thursday from 6 to 9 a.m. at the Best Western Plus Vernon Lodge.

“I hope everyone comes out and has fun,” said Linda Yule, United Way executive director, of the event which raises funds for 27 non-profit agencies.

There are a total of 800 bags, which include a range of food items, and the event generally sells out.

One of the bags will include a grand prize of two tickets to two Seattle Mariners games and two nights accommodation.

Besides breakfast, participants can get a newspaper, a complimentary coffee and their windshield washed.

Last year, the breakfast raised $12,300.

The fundraiser is the official kick-off to the United Way’s annual campaign, which hopes to raise $300,000 by the end of 2011.
