UPDATED 2:15 P.M. FRIDAY, AUG. 17: The victim is a 17-year-old Vernon girl. Her name has not been released as relatives are still being notified.
The driver of the car is a 68-year-old Vernon woman. She was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital after the accident for treatment of her injuries. She remains in VJH.
The cyclist was not wearing a helmet, but police say it’s unknown at this time if a helmet would have made a difference to her injuries.
Police reconstruction analyst says it could take some time to determine the exact cause of the crash.
A serious accident has occurred on a busy Vernon road.
RCMP and paramedics responded to 25th Avenue and 37th Street at 6:30 a.m. (Friday) after reports of a collision between a cyclist and a vehicle.
The teenage cyclist, a girl, was sent to Vernon Jubilee Hospital in critical condition but she has since died of her injuries.
“The investigation has learned that a teenaged girl was on her bike traveling in the bike lane eastbound when she was struck by a car driven by Vernon resident in her 60s,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The young cyclist was rushed to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.”
