Vernon budget generates little interest

City council going through details of draft financial plan this week

Tradition continues as residents avoid the City of Vernon’s budget sessions.

Only one person attended the session today (Wednesday) and they did not speak during the designated opportunity to provide input.

Coun. Juliette Cunningham is not concerned about the lack of residents present.

“It’s reflective of how the budget process has gone,” she said.

“Tremendous work has been done by the division managers, the chief financial officers and the chief administrative officer and we (council) spend a lot of time with our strategic plan. I think there is overall (public) confidence in it.”

The draft 2014 budget includes a tax hike of 3.7 per cent — 1.8 per cent for operations and 1.9 per cent for infrastructure.

Several divisional reports were presented today, but there was little discussion and council is already dealing with items scheduled for Thursday’s agenda.

Thursday’s budget meeting begins at 11 a.m., with public input planned for 11 a.m. There is also supposed to be a meeting Friday at 9 a.m.
