Vernon council gives final blessing to budget

The budget includes a 3.23 per cent increase in taxes, or an additional $30 for the average home.

Vernonites know exactly what the tax man expects from them.

Council adopted the 2014 city budget Tuesday, including a 3.23 per cent increase in taxes, or an additional $30 for the average home.

“It’s one of the best budgets I’ve seen in the six years I’ve been on council,” said Coun. Bob Spiers.

“It contained very little fat.”

Of the 3.23 per cent, 1.9 per cent is designated for infrastructure improvements while the remainder of the money will go towards general operations.

“We’ve made a concerted effort to keep with the 1.9 per cent for infrastructure and to keep things low with inflation,” said Coun. Catherine Lord.

“The direction from council to staff, and which has been carried about by the chief administrative officer (Will Pearce) is restraint, restraint, restraint.”
