Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP urge caution on roads

Heavy influx of motorcycle traffic expected in region for Sturgis North and Salmon Arm Summer Stomp festivals...

Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP wants to remind the motoring public of the heavy influx of motorcycle enthusiasts that will be flooding the area during the weekend.

The Sturgis North Motorcycle Rally is underway through to Sunday at the MotoPlex Speedway and Event Park in Spallumcheen this weekend, and is expected to attract thousands of motorcycle riders into the area.

There is also the annual Salmon Arm Summer Stomp, featuring motorcycles and music, which begins tonight and runs to Thursday at a rural property in the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP boundary on Salmon River Road.

“The increase in motorcycle traffic will be a significant departure from our regular summer vacationing traffic,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP Cpl. Gerry Kovacs. “We will be increasing our visibility on the roadways in our area this weekend to ensure the safe passage of the motoring public.

“Our commitment to road safety is a priority; drivers can expect to see high visibility road checks focusing on drinking drivers, motorcycle safety and enforcement of B.C.’s new helmet laws that came into effect earlier this year.”

Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP wishes to remind all users of our roadways to take some extra time, be courteous and stay vigilant.  Please consider the safety of your friends, your family and your community before you get behind the wheel.

  • Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP will also have high visibility in Armstrong Friday and Saturday, patrolling the Hassen Arena and IPE grounds during the second annual Armstrong Metalfest, an event that features heavy metal bands.
