Vernon pilot identified as crash victim

B.C. Coroners Service identifies victim of float plane crash near B.C.-Alberta Border as Yves Rene, 62.

A Vernon pilot has been identified as the person killed in an airplane crash near the B.C.-Alberta border Friday.

Yves Rene, 62, was the pilot and sole occupant aboard a Cessna 182 float plane that had made a landing at Fortress Lake, an isolated high-altitude lake in Hamber Provincial Park west of Jasper.

According to the B.C. Coroners service, the plane apparently crashed when Rene was taking off from the lake.

An emergency location transmitter signal came from the plane shortly before 2 p.m. Friday.

Search and rescue personnel attended the crash site and found Rene dead at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
