A Vernon principal is one of the best in the country.

Jacqueline Taylor, from Ellison Elementary School, is among 40 educators named Canada’s Outstanding Principals by the Learning Partnership.

“We are delighted to be celebrating these exceptional principals for their contributions to their schools and communities,” said Rod Thompson, director of executive leadership programs at the Learning Partnership.

“Their dedication to building and leading teams of great teachers plays a vital role in positively impacting student achievement and success and we are elated to recognize these dynamic leaders in the Canadian public education system.”

Taylor is described as a champion, advocating for her students and families at Ellison, many who face diverse challenges. A variety of nutrition programs were instituted and social work and counselling services were increased, focusing on emotional health.

She introduced a walking school bus involving parent volunteers accompanying students walking to school.

“Jacquie helped form community agency partnerships to provide additional supports and acquired technology, texts and musical instruments for students,” states a release.

“The school-based team regularly reviews students at risk, implementing targeted interventions. Jacquie also provides common planning time so teachers can collaborate to better serve the diverse learning needs of students. As a result, regular attendance has improved and there is significant growth in literacy achievement.”

The 40 principals were nominated by parents, colleagues, and community members. They will be honoured at the annual Canada’s Outstanding Principals gala Feb. 28 in Toronto.

The winners also benefit from a five-day executive leadership training program at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. The program will introduce them to leadership and management practices presented by business, government and education leaders as well as Rotman faculty.
