Vernon RCMP are investigating a stolen vehicle spree in East Vernon Thursday.
Just after 1 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a report of an accident in the 3700 block of Welker Road, off East Vernon Road.
“The person who called said that there was a small vehicle in the ditch that crashed just behind his house and that two men were on his property looking in one of his cars,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
The vehicle in the ditch was a1 995 Honda Del Sol. It was towed for forensic examination, and officers determined it had been stolen earlier in the evening from the owner’s driveway on 20th Street in Vernon.
As the officer was going to investigate the accident and the report of prowlers, he was less than a block away when he noticed a vehicle coming at him at high speed.
“Our officer attempted to stop the vehicle but it went around him and off the road into a shallow ditch,” said Molendyk. “It appeared to have two female occupants in the vehicle. It took off and our officer was unable to get a plate number.”
When the officer arrived at the caller’s home, he was directed to a shed in the backyard where two men could be heard rummaging around.
“When our constable announced his presence he heard the two take off,” said Molendyk. “He chased them for a short distance then requested a police service dog team. The dog team tracked along East Vernon Road then lost the track near Bolduc Road.”
While they were tracking, police came across a Red Ford Mustang that had the driver’s door open in the driveway of a residence off of BX Road.
The ignition had been tampered with.
Officers are continuing to investigate all of these thefts and attempted thefts of vehicles. Anyone who may have seen or heard anything in relation to the activity in the area is asked to call the Vernon RCMP detachment at 250-545-7171.
