UPDATE, 10:55 A.M. TUESDAY, AUG. 20: Crown counsel has approved a charge of murder against a 95-year-old Vernon man in connection with the death of an 85-year-old man at the Polson extened care facility Monday.
John Furman made his first court appearance Monday and was remanded in custody. He is slated to appear again in Vernon Provincial Court Wednesday.
UPDATE 3:20 P.M. MONDAY, AUG. 19: Interior Health is not able to provide a spokesperson at this time. In a statement released to North Okanagan media outlets, Interior Health says, “Our attention today must be focused on meeting the needs of our other residents and staff, as well as responding to the needs of the RCMP.”
In its one-page statement, Interior Health confirms an incident occurred at Polson special care in Vernon Sunday night and that RCMP were immediately called.
“We have been in contact with both families of the residents involved in this tragic event, and our heart goes out to them,” said the statement. “At all of our residential care facilities, our first priority is the safety of our residents, and we are taking this incident very seriously and cooperating fully with police.”
Interior Health said as the matter is an RCMP investigation, they will not release any specific details related to the incident “in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation.”
As of 3:15 p.m., Vernon RCMP had nothing else to say at this point as the matter is still being investigated, and police were still on-scene at the facility.
Interior Health has said they will be conducting an internal investigation.
Interior Health describes the Polson special care facilityis a 26-bed secured dementia unit that provides care for people whose dementia is complicated by behavioural or psychiatric issues.
Vernon RCMP have confirmed a homicide investigation has begun as the result of an incident at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Polson residential care facility.
RCMP officers were called to the facility at 11 p.m. Sunday, where they learned that a 95-year-old resident had allegedly assaulted his roommate, an 85-year-old man.
The victim died of his injuries at the scene.
The suspect has been taken into custody.
Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said Monday that RCMP will not be releasing many details as the matter is under investigation. He called the case, “tragic.”
“It’s not often you have people at this age and we’re investigating a homicide,” said Molendyk. “It’s a very sad case.””
