Charred remains and a blanket of red fire retardant is what residents returning to their homes in Okanagan Centre are seeing today.
The fire that started Saturday is 100 per cent contained, though hotspots are still flaring up.
Despite hotspots, residents of the 58 evacuated properties on Nighthawk, Long and Tyndal roads were given the go-ahead Wednesday to return to their homes and a Capital News crew was there.
Eight homes were razed by fire, and cars and personal property could be seen embedded in the sooty remains of those addresses. Firefighters said the blaze was likely sparked by people, though they’ve offered no details on how it happened.
Residents returning to their homes will stay on evacuation alert and should be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
Ground crews will continue extinguishing spot fires and conducting danger assessments and falling trees in fire impacted areas throughout the day Wednesday.
Residents are asked to go to www.cordemergency.ca/resources for information on what to do when returning home after a forest fire and to contact Fortis at 1-888-224-2710 to have natural gas service restored to their houses,.
