Village wants post offices open

Lumby council will write the federal government and demand rural post offices remain open

Lumby council will write the federal government and demand rural post offices remain open.

“The rural postal service is important,” said Mayor Kevin Acton. “Canada Post’s business model has to change but closing post offices is not the way to do it.”

Council acted after a presentation from the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association, which says Canada Post has closed 1,700 post offices since the 1980s.

“In the Internet era, where sending and receiving parcels has grown, and where many small business depend even more on reasonably priced, reliable, local postal service, the closing or cutting back on postal services is hurting the development of rural Canada,” states the association.

Acton says there are no concerns about the Lumby post office shutting down.

“Our post office is a busy and important part of our community,” he said.
