A Vernon woman died after being thrown from a motorcycle on Highway 97 near Okanagan Falls Wednesday.

The RCMP received a report of a motorcycle losing control on a hairpin curve around 7:05 p.m. at Vaseux Lake.

Traffic investigators confirmed that the husband and wife on the Harley Davidson motorcycle were northbound when the operator lost control when negotiating the hairpin turn, throwing both riders of the bike into the oncoming traffic.

Both riders were injured when they were run over by a southbound 2004 Ford Explorer.

The 52-year-old Vernon woman died at the scene and her 60-year-old husband received moderate injuries and was admitted to hospital.

RCMP traffic investigators are continuing their investigation into the crash, with the preliminary determination that speed is a contributing factor.

That portion of highway is in a posted 80-kilometre-an-hour zone with a posted 40-kilometre-an-hour cautionary speed advisory sign at the curve.
