The cause of Tuesday’s Bella Vista wildfire has been determined.
Apparently a young person found a lghter, tested it and accidently initiated a fire in the tinder-dry grass. The blaze spread to 36 hectares and threatened two homes.
“The young offender, who cannot be identified, has been co-operating with the investigators and they are recommending that this case be forwarded to the restorative justice program so the young person can be held accountable for their actions,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.
Residents are urged to be cautious with fire sources because of ongoing dry conditions in the North Okanagan.
“The warning needs to be very clear at this time that the conditions in our area right now are such that a fire can be out of control in minutes,” said Molendyk.
