COOLS
We regret to announce that Adrienne Cools, long time North Okanagan resident and daughter of pioneering Vernon area residents, died peacefully on June 12th, 2003 after a lengthy illness at the age of 79. She will be sorely missed by her daughter Diana Cools (Neil Remsbery) of Vernon, niece Elizabeth (Jerry) Scherle, nephews - Bruce (Glenda) Middleton, Andrew Middleton (all of Kelowna), Peter (Sandy) Middleton, (Winfield), plus her uncle - Ivor Batten, Kelowna, special cousin Phyllis (Tad) Riley, San Diego, CA, and numerous other cousins in the U.S. and Belgium. ‘Adry’ Cools was born in Vernon on August 14th, 1923 to Joseph and Vera (nee Wilmont) Cools and the second of two daughters. Her father had emigrated from Belgium, along with his friend Baron Herry, to the Vernon area in 1908 to take up farming in the BX district and he then later married Vera Wilmot of Vernon. Her early days were spent on the farm near Cools Pond where her father had established an orchard. In the late 1920’s they moved their home to the lakeside at Okanagan Landing and subsequently in 1935 they purchased the lakefront property at Carr’s Landing known as Okanagan House (latterly known at The Paddock) where she spent her teenage years. She was schooled in Vernon and at Crofton House girls school in Vancouver and after graduating she went on to Spokane, Washington, where she studied to be a Medical Lab Technician. Her career in that field began at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops where she met and married Ed Maki in 1957. Later they welcomed their daughter Diana who then became the focus of her life and they moved to Carr’s Landing where they remained until 1978 when she and Diana moved to Vernon and then finally the Coldstream area in 1980. Funeral Services will be held at All Saint’s Anglican Church, 3205 - 27th Street, Vernon, B.C. at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 25th, 2003.
