October 17, 1918 – September 15, 2009
Surrounded by family and friends, Lorraine passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Vernon, almost reaching her ninety-first birthday. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-five years, Frank, in December of 2007. Lorraine is lovingly remembered by her daughters Heather (Steve) Rumsey of Victoria and Holly (Jack) Smith of Vernon. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Lisa Rumsey, Deanna (James) Walters, Aaron Smith and Karalee Smith, and two great grandchildren, Cedar Rumsey and Kachina Rumsey Violini.
Born to Irish immigrant parents, Lorraine spent her youth in Nanaimo and the Kitsilano area of Vancouver. She often spoke of the fun they had as teenagers, dancing and spending time at the beach. Lorraine and Frank met at a country dance in Burnaby and spent the next sixty-five years dancing together. They made a great team, hardworking, organized and creative. Lorraine was the homemaker, excelling in cooking, needlework, sewing and knitting, while dabbling in crafts, ceramics and painting. Her spirit of adventure showed when she willingly moved from Vancouver to Hope in the 1940’s and then from Hope to Westbank in the early 1970’s. Her final move was to Vernon in the 1980’s where she and Frank enjoyed retirement, gardening, golfing, square-dancing and traveling.
Lorraine believed strongly in serving the community, volunteering more than seven thousand hours for Hospital Auxiliary in her lifetime. Feisty until the end, she loved the hugs and kisses at Hospice House. She will be fondly remembered by friends and family.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6th at All Saints’ Anglican Church, 3205 – 27th Street, Vernon. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to remember Lorraine may make a donation to the North Okanagan Hospice Society, 3506 – 27th Avenue, Vernon, BC V1T 1S4.
