We regret to announce the passing of Alfred Gorovenko on April 4th, 2014 at the age of 87 surrounded by his loving family in his home in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. He will be lovingly missed by: his wife, Erma, married 59 years; sons, Robert (and child Aaron), Bruce, David (wife Mariana and child Katrina); daughter, Brenda (and husband Bruce Haas).
Born in Hafford, Saskatchewan on January 13th, 1927 to parents of Ukrainian heritage, Alfred was raised on the family homestead where he learned the value of hard work and perseverance. He was a long-time resident of Vernon having moved to the area with his parents, brother and sister in 1947. It was there that he married Erma Meeker in 1955, and together they raised four children on an acreage not far from town. In Vernon, Alfred worked in the forest industry as a sawyer, scaler, and weigh station operator until his retirement in 1992.
Alfred will be remembered as a kind and generous man, with a great love and talent for horticulture. He will also be remembered for his zest for life, strong faith and a sense of humor which never ceased even through trying times. His home was always a place of welcome and openness for people of many creeds to share and worship together, or sometimes just a warm place to spend the night for strangers in need who were passing by.
Alfred was predeceased by: his parents, Lazarus and Elizabeth; brother, Walter; sisters, Alvina and Ann; and also brothers-in-law, Steven Elian and Mike Kashuba. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 11th, 2014 at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, 4303 Pleasant Valley Road, Vernon, BC.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, Phone: 250 542 4333. Condolences may be offered at www.pleasantvalleyfh.com
