Alice Beals

Alice Louise (Gummy) Beals

(nee Oliver)

was born in Vernon, B.C. on November 1st, 1922 , the youngest child born to Walter John Oliver & Lydia Louise (Drake) Oliver. Her five siblings: Winnie, Frank, Annie, Albert and Isabelle all preceded her in death. Alice was a high school athlete and met William Franklin Beals as a teenager and they became sweethearts. Both William & Alice enlisted in the RCAF during World War 11 and while in England they were married at Wimbleton, returning to Canada on Valentine’s Day 1945. They bought the Oliver cabin on Kal Lake and William & Alice made this their home, raising their family here.

Alice will be lovingly remembered by her three children, Ron (Karen), Diane (Ray) Dase and Gary (Shaun); seven grandchildren, Denise (Chad), Kevin, Neil, Steven (Harmony), Tyler, Lisa (Bill) and Jason; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984.

Alice enjoyed her hobbies of gardening, poetry and scrapbooking and it was tough beating her at a game of scrabble. She was able to go back to London, England and also traveled across Canada and parts of the USA during her lifetime. Alice was involved with Scouting as a leader, training leaders and being the person in charge of the awards presentations. She received the Silver Acorn Award in 1991 for especially distinguished service to scouting. Alice was also a member of the Naturalist Club and loved watching birds, doing bird counts and keeping nest records for Victoria. She was able to stay in her home at Kal Lake until November 1st, 2008 when she moved to Carrington Place.

Cremation preceded a Reception which will be held in the Tea Room at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 29th, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Alice to the North Okanagan Hospice Society, 3506-27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S4.
