In the Concert of Life No One Gets a Program
‘Van het concert des levens krijgt niemand een program’
Alida Wilhelmina de Langen took life as it came without complaint. Mom loved life and savoured every moment. Her greatest attribute was a positive and joyful nature that touched everyone she knew. Open and selfless, she was sweet to the core. Her face beaming, she’d say, “Well, all we can do is keep smiling!” She never gave up.
Alida passed away Wednesday August 26 2009, at Hospice House, surrounded by the love of her 3 daughters, one of her six grandchildren and dog Raven. She was 87. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Mattheus and her daughters and their families: Ronee de Langen (granddaughter Sheena) of Vernon, Alida and husband Bob Chapman (grandchildren Connie, Adam & David) of North Vancouver and Sonja and husband David Adams (grandchildren Gavin & Elspeth) of Saint John, New Brunswick.
A talented gardener, she could make anything grow. Alida played piano, violin and sang in choirs, including the Vernon Seniors’ Choir. An accomplished seamstress, she also did many forms of embroidery, knitting and crocheting. For many years, Alida worked as secretary and bookkeeper alongside her husband, Matt in their business.
Born in The Hague, Holland, Alida left her large, closely knit family, to follow her husband to Venezuela with her first child in tow, bore her second there and finally her third in Canada. She loved a good visit. She loved her children and grandchildren and making new friends. Alida’s legacy will forever be her family.
A Memorial Service and Reception Tea will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 2, at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home followed by A Celebration of Life.
In lieu of flowers please consider North Okanagan Hospice House and the Canadian Diabetes Society.
