Aug 23, 1924 – Dec 11, 2017
Al was born to Scottish immigrants William & Christian Aitken in Oak Park, Illinois, & grew up in Scarborough ON. He took a degree in Animal Husbandry & Crop Science at Guelph.
He met & married Eleanor Henderson in Lacombe AB. They farmed near McBride BC, where their 3 daughters were born. They next farmed near Innisfail, then moved to Lethbridge where Bill was born. Later, Al sold forest products in Calgary, Vancouver & Langley where they eventually retired.
Al & Eleanor moved to Coldstream, then to Lumby. Al enjoyed playing the accordian, gardening, reading, writing poetry & short stories, dancing with mom & their friends, & hiking in the woods, hunting for wild flowers & mushrooms.
Al was serious, quiet & unassuming, but very opinionated about Canadian regional politics. “What an idiot” was his often heard opinion of most politicians. He often joked that he preferred the company of dogs, of which they had many over the years.
Allan stayed by Eleanor’s side during her prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s & missed her terribly when she died in 2016. Al will be greatly missed by his family & friends.
He is survived by his children Hattie Aitken, Mary Dunlap, Carrie Nelson, & Bill Aitken & their families.
A celebration of life is planned for summer 2018.
