Amy Singleton Ogasawara

The family is saddened to announce the passing of Amy Singleton Ogasawara at Noric House on December 16, 2005. She was born on August 19, 1913 in Maghera, Ireland, came to Canada in 1927, and moved to Vernon in 1934. This colleen brought her spirit from the green fields of Ireland, and was proud to make Vernon her home.

Amy was predeceased by her husband Sigie, 2 sons Mickey and Normie, and grandson Doug. She is survived by her loving family, daughter in laws, Shirley and Tillie Ogasawara,of Vernon. 5 grandchildren, Dave (Charlotte) Ogasawara, and their children Bradley and Brett, Lumby; Cindy Thompson (Ken), Pitt Meadows; Derry (Penny) Ogasawara and their children Candace and Kristy, Salmon Arm; Laurie (Norm) Amiel and their children Trevor and Tyler, Vernon; and Dwayne Ogasawara of Vernon. She is also survived by Doug’s daughter, Ashley; Doug’s wife Vicky of Hawaii; and nieces and nephews and extended family. She is the last surviving member of her family, with her brother, Cecil, pre-deceasing her on December 10, 2005.

Amy and Sigie, who were married for 54 years, owned the Bella Vista Grocery. During this time, she raised her family and became involved in community activities. She loved her volunteer work, first with the Catholic Women’s League and the Kiwasa, and later with the Canadian Mental Health where, for 13 years, she organized the annual “Gift of Hope” campaign. She loved to watch her sons play hockey, lacrosse, and softball, and became involved in the Vernon Curling Club. She took pride that even as a great- grandmother she kept up with all the latest fashions.

Thanks especially to all the special people at Noric House who not only provided loving, patient care, but also listened to her many stories and joked with her, brightening her every day.

A Memorial Funeral Service will be held in St. James Roman Catholic Church, Vernon, on Thursday, December 22 at 11 A.M. Fr. Martin Peyton officiating. Donations may be made in memory of Amy Ogasawara to Canadian Diabetes, Box 1301, Vernon, B.C. V1T 6N6 or Noric House, 1400 Mission, Vernon, B.C. V1T 9C3.
