FERNUIK, Andrew Harry
On March 26th, 2014, at the age of 81, Andy left us after a determined fight with cancer and we expect, true to form, that he bartered his way into the next world and got a good deal.
He is lovingly survived by: his sons, Richard in Calgary; Brent (Janelle) and his precious grandchildren, Taia and Elias, in Toronto; his brother, David, in Coquitlam; and sister, Irene, in Camas, Washington. Many nieces & nephews, with whom he always kept in touch, will also miss him. He will sadly missed by, Jean, his partner of fifteen years, and her children and grandchildren.
Andy worked for the CNR for over 43 years, starting at a young age and working his way up the ladder. He was involved with the Calgary Army Cadets for many years, volunteering as their camping trip cook and shooting instructor. One of his proudest accomplishments was as an official for the biathlon events at the Calgary Winter Olympics. Here in Vernon, he was a member of the Vernon Golf Club, loved to curl, square dance and won awards for his beautiful garden flowers.
From this very generous man, you could always count on a sharp knife, a good meal, a little cheer, a good story told, and a candy from his pocket.
At Andy’s request, there is not to be a formal funeral service, but a gathering for family and friends is being planned for a later date. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Dr. Humphrey, Dr. Rankin, the nursing and support staff at both the cancer clinic and Hospice House.
Those friends wishing to make a memorial contribution in memory of Andrew, please do so to North Okanagan Hospice Society, 3506-27th Avenue, Vernon, B. C. V1T 1S4 or the B.C. Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, Phone: 250 542 4333. Condolences may be offered at www.pleasantvalleyfh.com
