van der MEER
Antje van der Meer passed away peacefully on July 31, 2013 at Vernon Hospice House in her 86th year. She is survived by her three married children, Joanne Mitchell (Dale) of Vernon, Norman Bruyel (Georgia) of Oliver, and Marina Millman (Geoff) of North Vancouver, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Antje is from a family of ten brothers and sisters, five of whom survive her.
Known to her friends as Annie, children as mom, and grand and great-grandchildren as Oma, Antje lived a full life with many joys and few sadnesses.
She met and married her first husband, Herman Bruyel, in Winterswijk, Netherlands in 1952 and shortly thereafter boarded a ship for a new home and a new life in Canada. They eventually settled in Christian Valley, BC and started their family there. The family moved to Osoyoos in the early 1960’s and lived there for the rest of Herman’s life.
Herman passed away in 1985 and Antje later moved to Summerland where she met long-time friend Tom Hudson who predeceased her this year. She moved to Vernon to be closer to family in 2008. She was fortunate to reside for her final days at the Vernon Hospice House where a caring staff did everything they could to make her last days as comfortable as possible.
Antje will be remembered for her quick wit, a warm and loving heart, and sometimes a sharp tongue. On the right occasions, she felt that the best defense was a good offense. She exercised regularly and took pride in always presenting herself well. She will be lovingly missed by all who knew her, especially her family.
There will be a private celebration of life at a date to be determined.
