1934 – 2014
Arie was born in Papendrecht, Nether-lands. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 at the age of 22, travelling by ship, then by train from Halifax to Red Deer, AB. It was here while working as a cook at Deerhome Institute that he met his wife Arline; they married in April 1960. The first of four children arrived in 1962 and Arie took the family to Holland to meet his relatives; the first of many trips he enjoyed back home. Three more children in the next few years completed his family.
Arie and Arline came to BC after visiting friends and fell in love with the area, moving his family to the Okanagan Valley in 1968, eventually settling in Armstrong.
Arie had a very strong work ethic and purchased his first truck, starting out as Arie Haak Roofing. Through hard work and perseverance, he established Armstrong Roofing.
Arie was a member of the Kinsmen, Legion, and IOOF. He enjoyed family, friends, travelling, and the outdoors.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Arline; sons: Kerry (Pam), Trevor (Denise); daughter: Faith; daughter-in-law: Donna (Bob); grandchildren: Andrew, Angela, Christopher (Katey), Ryan (Abbie), Orry, Skylar, Riley, Dustin (Christine), Kara (Curtis); siblings: Teunis, Truus, Dien (Leen), Huib (Gré), Kees (Ria); numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is predeceased by his son Mark; parents: Teunis and Antje; brother-in-law: Wim Bil; and sister-in-law: Janny Haak.
