Arnold Jansen

Arnold was born May 21, 1923 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and entered into the presence of his Lord on Friday October 3, 2014.

He passed away due to complications from Alzheimer at the age of 91 years.

Mourning his passing are his loving family; wife of 56 years Renate, his sons Arnie and Jim both of Vernon, sister and brother-in-law Joy and Pat O’Brien of Vernon, brothers–in law Gottfried (Christa) Schalm of Calgary, Erwin (Susan) Schalm of Kelowna, numerous nieces and nephews. Arnold was predeceased by parents Mechelina and Albert Jansen.

Arnold arrived in Canada from the Netherlands in 1948 with his parents and settled in Vernon in 1949. The family business of Albert’s Nursery was established shortly after, and in operation until his retirement in 1989. Arnold was able to continue his former routine of tending to plants, shrubs, and trees, and interacting with clients at Swan Lake Nurseryland, thanks to Mike Kowaluk for giving him that opportunity. Arnold’s second retirement came due to a heart attack. He then discovered the hobby of growing beautiful Orchids, and enjoyed the association with other growers.

An important part of his life was his faith and church, serving as head usher for many years. Everyone entering Faith Baptist was met with a genuine and cheerful welcome, enjoying every moment of his ushering duties, even with a hug if he felt it was needed. Arnold liked to connect with people, anytime, anywhere, no matter who it was. For 18 years he was a faithful volunteer with his wife at the Upper Room Mission. With the Greater Vernon Garden City Society he found common ground to add beauty to the community. It was Arnold’s desire to establish a “Memory Lane”, which starts on 32 Street, west on 25 Avenue, with a trail system towards Okanagan Lake. It gave him satisfaction when it became reality with the help and support of countless individuals, civic, business, community organizations, and others. Arnold enjoyed volunteering, for City Centennial year celebration, and was a Boy Scout leader in his early years.

Sincere thanks to our family physicians Dr. F. Dyck, Dr. R. Sawatzky, Dr. H. Gilchrist, and all the professionals at VJH. Also thank you to ER doctors; Dr. H Yacyshyn, Dr. M Murphy and the 2nd floor east, and Heron Grove cottage 4 staff.
