ART SCHMIDT

1926 – 2012

REMEMBERED AS A WELL KNOWN VERNON BUSINESSMAN

Art was born on July 23rd, 1926 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan and passed away on August 6th, 2012 in the North Okanagan Hospice at the age of 86 years. Art had been an Optician first in Kelowna before coming to Vernon over 63 years ago and opening his own office downtown.

Art is survived by his wife Kay; four children, Duff (Sandee), Chris (Sandy), Greg (Susan) and Kim (Norm); and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by all of his eight siblings and their spouses.

Over the years Art was involved and always found time to participate in many community activities. In January 1960 he joined the Rotary Club of Vernon and presided as President from ’70-’71, later becoming a member of the Paul Harris Fellowship. He was Finance Chairman of the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, a member of the Vernon City Advisory Planning Commission and Trustee of Noric House. Art truly loved this community. He was seen even during his last days with us, still going to work and walking around town with a happy smile on his face. Everyone who knew him will truly miss his great smile.

Art was a Veteran of WW11 PPCLI Regiment and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Vernon Branch #25, for over 58 years. He played in the Don Ross Band in the Okanagan Valley. Along with “Keith” the coach, created and named the Vernon Kokanee Swim Club – the first swim club in the Valley. Art loved to snow ski and was a member of the Ski Instructor Alliance, teaching beginners and children in the Vernon Ski Club. He loved to golf, dance, go on cruises and spend time with his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. The family run business of Art Schmidt Optical will continue his legacy.

Cremation preceded a Graveside Service which was held at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery on Friday, August 10th, 2012 at 9:30 A.M. with Mr. Brian Jackson officiating. The final Farewell to a Comrade was presented by the Royal Canadian Legion Color Party at the conclusion of the service.

As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Art to the North Okanagan Hospice Society, 3506-27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S4.
