1929 ~ 2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Arthur Schlender on Saturday, May 19th, 2007 at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his brother, Herman (Inge); his sister, Hilde (Guenther) Markman; his brothers, Ewald (Heidi) and Waldemar; his sister, Helga (Gerhard) Pfennig and numerous nieces and nephews, all in Germany. Art will also be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his cousin, Lee Holland of Vernon, B.C.; his Godsons, Wolfgang Markman of Germany, David Pansegrau and Dennis Holland, both of Vernon, B.C.; and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, to whom he was married for 49 years; his parents, Emma and Rudolf Schlender and one brother, Horst. Art came to Canada as a teenager in the late 1940’s and went to work at Mabel Lake on his uncle’s farm as well as working in the bush, logging. After that, he was a mechanic at Vernon Motors for many years until arthritis forced him to take an early retirement. Art and Helen then bought some land by Swan Lake where they grew asparagus. He was a man who loved to talk and share tales of days gone by. Art loved camping but his favourite pastime was fishing and he knew the secrets of many of the lakes surrounding the valley. He was very good at tying flies and was generous with the results of his labours. Special thanks to family, friends and neighbours who helped Art these past few years with the yard work and by taking him around town. The Funeral Service will be held at the Bethel Funeral Chapel on Monday, May 28th, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Roy White officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family invites friends to join them at a Reception in the Tea Room at Bethel Funeral Chapel following the Graveside Service. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Art to the Arthritis Society of B.C., #200-1645 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. V6J 1S4. Funeral arrangements have been made with BETHEL FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD., 5605-27th Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 8Z5 (542-1187)
