ASHLEY JAMES MAILE
May 13, 1977 to May 13, 2013
It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the death of Ashley on his 36th birthday. Diagnosed with inoperable bowel cancer in February, he fought to the end with hope, humour, honour, and humility, taking a photograph of his “A Team” two hours before he died.
Born in Bromley, England, Ashley came to British Columbia at six weeks of age. He attended Hillview Elementary, and Vernon Senior Secondary school where he developed his passion for music and photography. Known locally in youth sports for soccer, cross country skiing, and track and field, he represented Vernon in both winter and summer games on many occasions. After Langara College he pursued his chosen career of rock band photography in Vancouver. While exploring prospects in London he met the love of his life, Caroline, and moved to England to be with her, making Brighton his home base. With his talent, passion, motivation, charismatic personality, and humour, he moved rapidly towards the top of his profession, as shown by the overwhelming number and quality of postings, Tweets, and e-mails received after the press release of his passing was published. Some of the biggest names and bands considered Ashley to be their favourite photographer, as well as being their friend. An exhibition of Ashley’s work is being planned for the fall in London.
A simple cremation was held on May 24 at the Downs Crematorium, Brighton, with family and very close friends attending.
Left to mourn his passing are his fiancée Caroline, mother Denise, father Geoff (Judy), the G-Ma Mary, sibs Denis and Carly, step-sib Matt (Morgan), uncles John (Sue), Rich (Patsie), and Lawrence, three cousins in Canada and four in England.
A gathering will be held at 7333 L. & A. Road, Vernon, on June 23, 2 pm to 6 pm, for anyone who knew Ashley. Please bring a story to share so that our tears can be lightened with laughter.
“Ashley’s humour and vibrancy will live on in all of our hearts. His sheer passion and drive to accomplish his goals will hopefully remind us all to work harder towards the life we too dream of.” Denis Maile.
We love you Ashley.
