Ate Hoekstra


Ate (Art) Hoekstra was born on August 30th, 1929 in Oudega, Friesland Netherlands and passed away peacefully in the Kelowna General Hospital on April 10th, 2006 at the age of 76 years. Art was predeceased by his wife Rosalea Hoekstra in May 1991, his parents Meije & Elizabeth Hoekstra, one brother Ane (Ernie) , his second wife Alma (Yates) Hoekstra and his partner and friend Doris Wiederick. Art is survived by his loving family three sons, Merl (Denise) of Monroe, Washington USA, Wayne (Janine) of Heightstown, New Jersey USA, Scott (Shelagh) of Coquitlam, BC, one daughter Lynne (Robert) Albrecht of Vernon, BC, his companion and special friend Irene Cassidy of Vernon, grandchildren, Jake, Ben, Courtney, Theis, Elyse, Paige, Morgan, Marijke, Carson, Robbie, and Julie. Two brothers, Theo (Rhea) of The Netherlands, Bill (Susan) of Chilliwack, four sisters, Lucie (Bob) of Chilliwack, Agnes (Bob) of Ontario, Jeltse of The Netherlands, Betsy (Eddie) of The Netherlands. Art grew up in The Netherlands and came to Canada in 1954, he married Rosalea in 1959 and they had four children, he lived in Lumby and worked for Lumby Timber, he then worked for Noca Dairy until his retirement in 1991, in his youth Art was an avid soccer player and speed skater. He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. James Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 29th, 2006 with Father Martin Peyton Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Following the graveside committal a reception will be held at St. James Roman Catholic Church. Those friends wishing to make memorial contributions in memory of Art may do so to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Vernon & District Hospice House 3506 27th, Ave, Vernon, BC V1T 1S4.
