Barbara Virginia Marie Newcomen (nee Watts) Haymond passed away at Heritage Square at 5:30 a.m., Monday, September 5, 2005 at 85 years of age. Barbara was born on February 22, 1920 in Mirror, Alberta. She is survived by her husband of almost 57 years William Gilmour Haymond, by her daughter Judith Anne Haymond of Vernon, B.C. and her son Terence Edward Haymond of Charlotte City, BC. Barbara is further survived by her younger brother Peter Watts and his wife Betty, and William’s sister Hazel Jean Portulas of northeastern Florida. She will be lovingly remembered by her four grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha Makarenko of Vernon, Jesse Haymond of Charlotte City and Leisha Shuling of Victoria.
Baby Barbara’s mother became very ill after the birth. Due to her own illness it was decided to take baby Barbara to England for better medical attention than the prairie town of Mirror could supply. Her father’s sister came from England and took Barbara home with her. Barbara was seven and a half years old before she was brought back to Canada. At the age of 17, Barb accepted an invitation to be a bridesmaid for her favourite cousin’s wedding in England. When unable to obtain passage home she settled in as a girl’s school matron. When she was 21 years old she was welcomed into the Woman’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS). She served as a telephone switchboard operator until December 1945, and returned to Canada in October 1946.
Barbara met William at an Irish dance the 17th of March 1948 and was married in the Anglican Church in Nanaimo, BC October 15, 1948. Barbara was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. A Celebration of life service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Wednesday, September 14th at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Barbara’s memory to the Salvation Army local family assistance fund. Arrangements are in the care of Personal Alternative Funeral Service. 558-0866.
