We lost our dear Basil Edwards on September 27, 2012. Basil was born in Delia, Alberta on January 24, 1923. In 1941, at the age of 18, Basil enlisted in the war effort. He became a decorated Flying Officer, completing his full set of missions plus two additional, surviving two belly landings in the process. In 2009, Basil spoke to senior students at the Vernon Secondary School about his experiences in the war and urged them to do what no other generation had been able to do – bring peace to our troubled world.
Basil was intensely passionate about Canada. He was very active in local politics with the Reform and Conservative parties and was past President of both the Lumby and Vernon Legions.
Basil loved to curl and golf – he could be seen racing around the local golf courses on his beautifully stylized scooter and skipped a Provincial Champion seniors team out of the Vernon Curling Club.
Basil was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary in 2008. Basil and Mary were longtime residents of Vernon and Lumby. They spent their last years together at Canterbury Court and truly appreciated the kindness of the staff and all of the wonderful friends that they had there.
Basil was an incredibly bright light in our lives. His big laugh and great hugs will be deeply missed.
Basil leaves to mourn his loss, his brother Dudley, brother-in-law George (Dorothy) Ramsay, sister-in-law Isobel Gordon (Ed), sister-in-law Anne Legg, nephews Don (Karen) Edwards, Gary (Cathy) Edwards, nieces Joni Ramsay, Judy (Les) Liebrecht, Debra Edwards, Brenda (Rob) DeWolfe, and Wendy Piper and his very special companion Freda Watson.
A Memorial to celebrate Basil’s life will be held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, 4303 Pleasant Valley Road, on Friday, November 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
Arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home 250-542-0155.
