Pioneer founder of Silver Star Ski Club and Sovereign Lake Nordic Club, Carl Wylie of Vernon and Eagle Bay passed away at home Sunday January 13th surrounded by loving family. He was 91. Born in Vernon in 1916, he was a grandchild of early Vernon pioneers. Carl was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking, huckleberrying, backpacking, ski jumping in Revelstoke, sailing and gardening. As a dedicated community volunteer, he held executive positions with the Vernon Lion’s Club, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Variance, Winter and Summer Games, World Cup (1991), Scouting and the North Okanagan Ski Club. He was the first Silver Star Ski Club President in l938 and Trails Chairman for the North Okanagan Cross Country Ski Club in the 70’s and 80’s designing and building the first 30 kms of trails at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Center. He was a top cross-country ski competitor racing in local and World Masters events in Germany and Wisconsin. He worked at Beatty Bros. as a young man where he met Flora whom he married in 1941. They spent their honeymoon skiing for a week at the top of Mt Revelstoke long before there was a road. Carl was a Veteran of WW II and served in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He enjoyed a 35 year career working for Okanagan Telephone and then BC Tel as District Customer Service Manager. In his spare time he built a summer home at Eagle Bay without the benefit of electricity or machines. He loved music and was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, all of them sharing his passion for skiing and the outdoors. He was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, mentor and friend and his loss is the end of an era for the skiing community.
