October 10, 2019
On October 10th, 2019, within the comfort of his home, Carlos Miranda, loving husband andbfather of two, passed away at the age of 76.
Carlos was born in Rizal, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, to Dr. Augusto Miranda and Avelina Ramos. He earned his BBA Banking and Finance major from The University of the East in Manila, Philippines. In 1971 he immigrated to Grande Prairie, Alberta; there he started his family and began his career in accounting and business management. In 1996 he married Angeles Calantuan, with whom he enjoyed an outgoing social life with their abundance of friends in the community until his retirement to Vernon in 2006 where he and Angie continued their community involvement and expansive friendships.
Reserved and unassuming, Carlos had a delightfully quick wit and clever sense of humor that attracted people to him. After immigrating to Canada, he immersed himself in the Northern culture, passionately sampling quintessential Canadian activities such as curling, camping, and cross- country skiing. With his strong sense of duty and unwavering integrity, Carlos quickly became a leader within the broader community, as well as the growing Filipino community. He was seen as a confidant mentor, often providing guidance and friendship to new Filipino-Canadians arriving in the area. In Vernon, Carlos developed a passion for golfing and gardening. When they weren't on the links, he and Angie could be found tending to their garden in the cooler morning hours of summer. Asking his grandchildren to pick raspberries was a welcomed task when they came to visit, and if it was just quiet enough, Carlos could be heard singing to himself as he watered his plants in the morning.
Carlos is survived by his wonderfully loving wife of 23 years, Angie; children, Jeanette (Colin) and Jeff (Marcie); his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ethan, Sophie, and Leo; his siblings Rene, Florencia, Augusto Jr. and Jose, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews who affectionately knew him as Kuya.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 18th, 2019 at 1 pm at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Donations may be made in Carlos' name to the Canadian Cancer Society.
