Cecil was born on August 11th, 1926 in Prelate, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully on October 26th, 2021 in Vernon, B.C. at the age of 95 years. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his sons; Doug (Chris) Dirk and Bruce (Tracy) Dirk, his daughters; Jane (Robert) Hein and Elaine (James) Viel, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, his sisters; Pearl Hormann and Isabel Doonanco along with numerous extended family members and friends. Cecil was predeceased by his sister; Patricia Wenzel and by his brother; Victor Dirk.
Cecil was born and grew up in Prelate, Saskatchewan. After serving in WWII he met and married Barbara Lee Tait in Meota, Saskatchewan. They settled in Vernon, B.C. in 1953. He first worked for the Bay and then as a bookkeeper for the original Kal Tire Shop. Cecil joined the City of Vernon in 1956 where he spent 29 years in finance, first as an Accountant, Deputy Treasurer, Collector, City Treasurer as well as acting Chief Administrative Officer. He worked with 9 different Mayors and 53 City Councillors. Always community minded with an interest in Recreation, he coached Minor Baseball in Coldstream and as a member of Coldstream's Recreation Commission advocated for the various neighbourhood tennis courts and the outdoor swimming pool in Lavington. After retiring he was successful in being elected to Coldstream Council. He served on the Board of Directors for the Halina Center, Okeefe Ranch and Vernon Resthome. Cecil chaired several committees including the Okanagan Regional Library Board and the building committee for the new United Church building after the old one burnt down.
Cremation preceded a private family Celebration of Cecil's Life which was held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Saturday, November 20th, 2021. Interment of Cecil's cremated remains followed in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
