It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Charlotte Bychowski of Vernon, BC on December 21st, 2009 at the fabulous age of 94 (February 1915, Dresden, Germany – December 2009) at the North Okanagan Hospice House.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Bettina Christine Antle and her partner, Harvey Elbe of Duncan, Vancouver Island, and granddaughter, Candice Charlotte Earle of Vancouver, both of whom were at her side in her final days. She was predeceased by her husband, Jan Gustav Bychowski and her second daughter, Sophie Charlotte Earle. Charlotte lived a very full life.
Her positivity and strength of character gave her the courage to survive the horrors of WWII. She immigrated to Canada with her husband and two daughters in 1954, making her home in numerous locations throughout Canada, including Quebec, Ontario and BC, settling in Vernon to begin a new life at the age of 80. One of her favourite sayings was, “I’ve been East and I’ve been West and Vernon is the BEST!” She was greatly loved by her many friends around the globe, but most especially in Vernon. She frequently expressed her gratitude and appreciation for their support, care, generosity and loving concern. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and avid curiosity about life, the future and the world around her knew no bounds. She always believed strongly in giving back to her community and in Vernon she devoted her time to the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and the Vernon Art Gallery.
Charlotte was never afraid to speak out and speak up; many will recall her frequent letters to the editor! A woman of many talents, she had a knack for excelling at any craft; she even began painting less that a year ago for the first time in her life and did it with such enjoyment and enthusiasm that she was even persuaded to have a 2010 calendar printed. Her cheerful presence was a ray of sunshine in so many lives and she will be hugely missed.
Charlotte LOVED penguins, and in her honour, there will be a “Penguin Party” to celebrate her life on Saturday, January 9th, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Schubert Centre. It will be attended by her “penguin family” who will be available for adoption. Donations to OSS, Vernon Branch will be gratefully received.
“May the long time sun shine on you,
All love surround you.
And the pure light within you
Guide you on your way.”
