We regret to announce the passing of Chieko Chiba at Kelowna General Hospital on April 29th, 2007 after a courageous battle with kidney failure.
Chieko was born in Armstrong on September 25th, 1918 to a pioneer family, Mr. and Mrs. Toyozo Ogata. She took all her schooling at the little red brick schoolhouse there. On December 1st, 1935 she married Tom Chiba at the original Japanese Hall on Bella Vista Road. She worked for many years on their orchard before retiring to garden, where she happily grew great crops of veggies, becoming the “forecaster” for Davison Orchard to start planting their corn. Many people were touched by her generosity and kind spirit.
She was a long time member of the Vernon Japanese Ladies’ Association (Funjinkai).
Chieko is survived by her husband, Takeshi (Tom) of Vernon, her daughter Miyoko Croken of Prince George, BC, her sister Tsutako Sakakibara, her sister-in-law Natsuko Ogata of Vernon, many loving nieces and nephews and her poodle Maisy. She was predeceased by her brother Tony Ogata in 1991 and her son Susumu (Sus) Chiba in March of 2007. Special thanks to her extended family for all the support as well as; Clifford Higano, the dialysis nurses of Kelowna General Hospital – Karen, Deanna, Jeanette, and Dr. Welsh of Kelowna and Terri, care worker (Vernon).
A Celebration of Life for Chieko will be held on Wednesday, May 9th, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at Trinity United Church, 3300 Alexis Park Drive in Vernon. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada (BC Branch) #320 – 1600 West 6th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V6J 1R3.
Arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home 250-542-0155. Condolences may be emailed to LOC3739@sci-us.com
