December 11, 1919 – December 15, 2016

Long time resident of Vernon, Cora Monsees, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord just a few days after her 97th birthday. Cora will be missed greatly by her three children, David (Cynthia) from Kamloops, Keith (Laurie) from Armstrong, and Lynne (Don) Burr from Abbotsford, as well as her grandchildren Jenna (Ryan), Troy, Shalena (Tim), Anika (Jason), Carly (Nathaniel), Jane, Matthew (Dawn), 10 great grandchildren, her sister Grace Hoglund in Kamloops, and many nieces and nephews.  Cora was predeceased by her husband Xel, in 1992, as well as her brothers Howard, Clarence, Elmer and Wilbert, and her sisters Fern and Vera. She loved her family dearly.

Cora was born on the farm in Estevan, Sask. in 1919, to Amy and William Hill, and moved with her family to Iowa and then to Manitoba. She arrived in Vernon in 1946, where she met and married her husband, Xel, in 1949.

Cora loved her community and her First Baptist Church family and enjoyed helping others. She and Xel delivered Meals on Wheels for a time, and she also loved to knit toques and make quilts for babies born in Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

Cora had the travel bug and enjoyed cruising as well as tours to Europe and trips with family members to the Maritimes, Eastern Seaboard and Hawaii. She and Xel spent many winters in Yuma, Arizona.

Over the years, Cora worked at Jacques Jewelers, Eatons and Harley’s Fabric Centre. She was an avid gardener, and especially enjoyed tending her flowers.

We would like to thank the lovely “family” at Hearthstone Manor for the exceptional care and attention they provided for Mom over the last few years.

A memorial service for Cora will be held at the First Baptist Church, 1406-32nd Avenue, on Tuesday December 20th at 2:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Upper Room Mission, if you wish.
