Dan passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at the age of 80. Survived by his loving wife of 55 years Margaret; two daughters: Karen Deans (Al) of Armstrong, BC, Cynthia Staicue (Gary) of Lake Country, BC; son Bruce of Kelowna; grandchildren; Alfie, Jennifer and Andrew Deans and Ryan and Corey Staicue; two great grandchildren: Joshua and Jordyn Deans; brother Bill Shumay (Olga) six sisters: Margaret Secora, Anne Buyer, Olga Pawliuk (Larry), Polly Poole (Jim), Lena Reid (Bud), Susan Della (Frank); brother-in-law Fred Chantler; and numerous other family members. Predeceased by his son Jeff in 1985, mother Mary, father John, three brothers; Nick, Fred and Mike; and sister Dora Chantler. Dan was born in Whitesand, SK in 1923. He moved with his family to Enderby, BC in 1936. Dan spent time in the army, and for 43 years he was a respected farmer and neighbour in Oyama. He was well known as “Dan the Man” at the Vernon Fruit Union, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 189, in Oyama, was a life member of the Oyama Community Club, volunteer fireman in Oyama, and received the Jean Vanier award. Dan was also a member of the St. Edward’s Catholic Church Men’s Association in Lake Country. He loved curling, fishing with his friend Bill Karras, and watering Marg’s plants. Many will remember him these past few years as the waterboy (flowers) and juice maker at the Gatzke Orchard and Fruit Stand and many local children (adults now) remember sitting on Santa Dan’s lap and pulling his beard for the past 42 years. Viewing and Prayers will be recited on Friday, July 11th at 7:00 pm at St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church, 11123 Okanagan Center Road East, Winfield, BC. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 12th at 11:00 am at St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Romeo Tolentino as celebrant. Cremation to follow.
