DAPHNE MANNING

Daphne Leola Manning

(nee Spiers)

It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Daphne Leola Manning on December 27th, 2013.

Daphne was born in Red Deer, Alberta on May 4th, 1925 and was the third daughter of Clifton and Tessa Spiers. She lived in the area until she ‘ran away from home’ and joined the Canadian Navy at age eighteen and headed for her ‘overseas tour’ in the Confederation of Newfoundland. She spent three years there until the end of the war. Daphne met and married her sailor in Esquimalt in June 1945 and they remained together until Ron’s death in 1993. Daphne and Ron raised their five children in Prince George, Kamloops and Vernon. In the last forty years in Vernon, Daphne was very involved in her children’s lives being a Brownie leader and a volunteer at West Vernon Elementary School. Bird watching became Daphne’s passion as her own chicks left the nest. She belonged to the North Okanagan Naturalist Club and was a member and volunteer of the Allan Brooks Nature Centre. Travelling to Mexico to enjoy her bird watching became a yearly pastime for her and her family.

Daphne was preceded in death by her husband, Wm. Ronald Manning and both her parents. She is survived by her two older sisters, Joan in Montreal and Maurine in Alaska; and will be lovingly remembered by her children, Eleanor Summers, Karen Leslie (David), Ronda Furlan (Claudio), Clifton Manning (Karen), Pamela Fournier (John) and son-in-law, Bruce Isobe; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Cremation preceded a Celebration Of Life Tea that will be held at the Schubert Centre on Wednesday, January 8th, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Daphne to the Allan Brooks Nature Center, 250 Allan Brooks Way, Box 20038, Vernon, B.C. V1T 9L4.

We, Daphne’s family would like to thank Dr. Barbara Picken for her tender, loving care and the staff who cared for our Mom during her stay at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
