He joined the Army Cadets while living in Prince George and during his time there was selected to attend the commonwealth shooting championship in England. Dave and his brother Ken were well known for their servicing and repairs of pools and water systems.

Dave joined the British Columbia Dragoons in 1973 and retired in 2005 having made it to the lofty rank of Corporal. During his time with the BCD’s he served as security at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 and deployed to Germany for the annual Reforger Exercises in 1977. His most memorable experience was travelling to Italy with the BCD WW2 Veterans in 1998 to commemorate the liberation of Italy.
